Trauma Resources International Update 2011–2012

October 1, 2011

Trauma Resources International ("TRI") is a small non-profit that was begun solely to support training and capacity building programs for low resource communities, organizations and countries who may otherwise not have the resources to receive this work. Established in late 2009, TRI "hit the ground, running" when the devastating earthquake of January 12th, 2010 shattered Port au Prince Haiti. TRI's Director, Amber Gray, has a long history of work, residence and friendship in Haiti.

TRI's post-earthquake programs for Haiti, Ke Ansam ("Hearts Together"), supported three local Haitian non-profit organizations- Athletique D' Haiti ("ADH"), IDEO & URAMEL (for more information on these organizations see TRI's website, www.traumaresourcesinternational.org). In 2010 TRI raised a total of $24,552.97 to support these programs. Details of these expenditures are included in TRI's Annual Report.

Now that the earthquake emergency phase is over, TRI has been invited to provide leadership and technical assistance on two projects. We have been asked to be the primary provider of technical assistance and program development/implementation for The Psycho Trauma Center's countrywide, community-based mental health program. This program, which will consist of extensive collaboration with local community and spiritual leaders throughout Haiti to develop locally, informed prevention, capacity building and post-disaster counseling programs is called "Project Hope in Haiti".

It is based on a similar project conducted by Columbia and New York Universities Schools of Social Work following 9/11. We are $100,000.00 short of our needed funding. A grant application, in partnership with Columbia University and New York Universities School of Social Work, made the finals but was not selected. Through fundraisers in New York City, at Bucknell University, and through networking, we have raised $5,000.00 towards this project. We are seeking a foundation or academic institution interested in collaboration and research to increase funding. A brief description of this project follows: Project Hope is a collaborative psychoeducational model for post-trauma support in underserved communities. The curriculum is developed in cooperation with community leaders (lay leaders as well as professional leaders) to tap the resource base of the population being served. The resulting curriculum combines psychoeducation with skill building and appropriate psychological processing of post-traumatic stress.

TRI's Director has also been asked to provide ongoing training in Somatic, Contemplative and Creative Arts-Based Therapies to all the providers who work at The Psycho Trauma Center. This project will take 1-2 years, and consist of a series of 3-4 trainings/year, with supervision provided remotely and in conjunction with training visits. This project is called "Ke Ansam ("Hearts Together"). Pictures of the introductory training are available in the photo gallery.

Your donation will support these innovative, community-based, exciting training and capacity building initiatives. 100 percent of donations go to training, supplies and logistical support for local community and spiritual leaders, lay counselors, first responders, health professionals and trained psychologists, who will be trained, empowered and supported to work collaboratively throughout Haiti as the leaders of a truly Haiti-centric mental health program.

Checks must be made out to TRAUMA RESOURCES INTERNATIONAL and can be mailed to:
