Somatic psychology, dance movement therapy, and the creative arts therapies transform the clinical process into an opportunity for healing to occur at multiple levels of human experience. Human communication is based on a continuum of experience, from the non-verbal, sensori-motoric realm to the more-complex, spoken, written and technological realms. My mind-body clinical framework, the Center -Post Trauma & Resiliency Framework, and its clinical counterpart, Restorative Movement Psychotherapy, is based on a developmental and phylogenic framework acknowledging the continuum of human communication. This continuum begins with sensori-motoric communication; the secondary languages are symbolism and the spoken word. My approach to psychotherapy is a restorative process that is, in any language, resource-based. I learned, from many years of work with survivors of extreme human rights abuses, that the reconnection to a sense of relative internal safety is necessary to facilitate a reconnection to the outer world. “Our experience of life occurs, at all levels, in our bodies – whether we describe experience cognitively, emotionally, physically or spiritually – our bodies serve as the primary reference point for our experience.”
